How Printer Vitals turns one photo into measured print findings
The method is built around a controlled physical page. The browser first proves that the photo is safe enough to measure, then maps the printed zones into a known coordinate system.
1. Standardized page geometry
The A4 and US Letter sheets use four AprilTag 36h11 corner markers, known paper dimensions and fixed measurement regions. The marker sets also let the analyzer identify A4 versus Letter and validate page orientation.
2. Capture validation comes first
Before a printer finding is produced, the analyzer checks the paper frame, all four markers, effective resolution, focus, illumination, grayscale/B&W misuse and several localized capture-artifact patterns. Unsafe evidence produces a specific retake request.
3. Zone A — line continuity
Each K/C/M/Y row contains controlled line elements. The analyzer classifies elements as complete, partial, missing or uncertain and looks for concentration patterns. These are printed measurement elements, not a claim about individual physical nozzles.
4. Zone B — horizontal banding and density drift
Tonal fields at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% are sampled in text-free regions. The engine looks for repeatable horizontal variation, dense streak morphology and progressive density drift while guarding against cross-channel lighting artifacts.
5. Zone C — paper-relative geometry
The photo perspective is rectified against the physical paper first. Printed references are then measured relative to that paper frame to estimate content scale, rotation and offset. This is why a camera angle should not be mistaken for a printer alignment error.
6. Zone D — relative channel health
Solid K/C/M/Y fields are compared using relative channel response. The output is intentionally coarse — for example Normal, Weak or Severely reduced — because a phone photo is not a spectrophotometer.
7. Cross-zone evidence
The engine combines evidence when possible. A weak color field without matching line evidence lowers confidence, while consistent evidence across zones can strengthen a diagnosis. Conflicting or capture-like patterns favor a retake.
8. Before/after retest
The browser stores the latest underlying metrics locally for the selected printer and page format. A retest therefore compares the same measurements rather than only an overall label.
